- New York

Chicago’s prominence in the rap game skyrocketed in the late 90’s and carried into the 2000’s thanks to local legends like Common, Twista and the absurd rise of Kanye Omari West! Chicago was definitely the capital of social, intellectual and spiritual rap but in the early 2010’s the whole scene changed in Chicago with the unprecedented rise of “Drill Music” making names like Chief Keef, Lil Durk and G Herbo (formerly Lil Herb) known nationwide. Currently, guys like Chance the Rapper, VIc Mensa, and Noname are holding the reign for Chicago while Common, Lupe Fiasco and Kanye are still showing their worth.
Well Known Artists: Eminem, Big Sean, Royce da 5’9”, Xzibit, Danny Brown, Obie Trice, J Dilla
Detroit has always been centered around music and it’s grit and grind. Eminem first put Detroit back on the map with the classic The Slim Shady LP. After a brief hiatus on th
e rap scene, it seems like Detroit is being helddown now by two of the most underrated rapper in the game– Big Sean (Yeah I said it, don’t @ me.) and Danny Bro
wn. Guys like Xzibit
and Royce da 5’9” also held it down for a grip in the 2000’s.
Well Known Rappers: Andre 3000, Outkast, T.I., Goodie Mob, Ludacris, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Migos, Future
Ever since the Dungeon Family took over the scene for the south in the mi
d 90’s, Atlanta has consistently been one of the most exciting factories for producing funky, feel good rap to absolute trap music and strip club BANGERS. Autotune reigns supreme in rap capital of the south with Young Thug and Migos running the radio, but lyrical masters like Andre 3000, T.I. and Cee Lo Green paved the way for these new generation rappers.
2. Los Angeles
Well Known Rappers: Tupac Shakur, NWA, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Game, all of TDE (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab Soul…) Warren G, Nate Dogg, YG, Most of Odd Future (Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt…)
What more can you say about LA! As the rap capital of the West and home to countless
major music industries, it has always been one step ahead of the game. It’s home to the best rapper of all time (Tupac), the 2nd best hip hop group of all time (N.W.A), the best current rapper (Kendrick Lamar), one of the best producers of all time (Dr. Dre), and more! LA never ceases to amaze me with the amount of music they put out BUT it’s not number one!
1. New York
Well Known Rappers: Nas, The Notorious B.I.G, Jay Z, Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC, Big L, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest, Dipset, G Unit, Nicki Minaj, A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Flatbush Zombies
I mean, what other city would you pick… TORONTO? KANSAS CITY? Fuck outta here with thar mess! New York created what we know today as hip hop and rap. From Grandmaster Flash & Kurtis Blow setting the foundation to Joey Bada$$ and Flatbush Zombies ke
eping the movement going, New York is rich in
hip hop history. Legendary rappers like Biggie Smalls, Jay Z, Nas, Wu Tang Clan and moe made the nation witness the explosion of rap and hip hop. Roc-a-Fella and Bad Boys Entertainment fed urban culture to listeners who craved it. Beefs like Nas vs. Jay Z and 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule brought the hip hop community to its feet. New York gave birth to the world’s most controversial genre of music and we are grateful for it.
